La Bahía de Santander: una de las más bellas del mundo

La bahía de Santander es una de las bahías más bellas del mundo, y lo mejor de todo es que no solo lo dicen los santanderinos, cosa que sería comprensible, sino los expertos que en su día la eligieron para que formase parte del Club de las Bahías más Bellas del Mundo, una asociación internacional a la que en España únicamente tienen el honor de pertenecer la ensenada cántabra y la bahía de Roses, en la Costa Brava (Cataluña). No todos pueden ser miembros de un club que en todo el mundo acoge a 36 socios, ya que hay que cumplir ciertos criterios, tales como, ser objeto de medidas de protección, tener una fauna y una flora de interés así como espacios naturales notables y atractivos, ser conocida y apreciada a nivel local y nacional, ser emblemática para la población local y tener un cierto potencial económico.

Sin duda que las increíbles vistas que se obtienen al entrar en la bahía han contribuido a esta distinción

De hecho, su acceso está precedido por la ensenada de El Sardinero, donde se localiza la isla de Mouro, mientras que el acceso al interior de la bahía es a través de un paso de mar entre la Península de la Magdalena (donde está el palacio del mismo nombre) y el arenal de El Puntal.

Desde el Embarcadero del Paseo de Peredade la capital parten cada 15 minutos barcos hasta Pedreña, las playas de Somo y el Puntal, así como hasta las playas de la Magdalena, el Sardinero y el faro de Cabo Mayor.

Son casi dos kilómetros de fina arena en las playas de la Segunda, la Primera, la Concha y el Camello. Junto a ellas discurre un paseo con vistas al Casino, a los jardines de Piquio y parque de Mataleñas y que acaba en el Faro. A lo largo de este recorrido se asoman numerosos establecimientos donde parar a tomar un refrigerio, en algún caso, con comedores y terrazas dignas de película, donde es posible comer viendo ese mar azul interminable.

El origen del Sardinero se remonta a finales del siglo XIX, con la moda burguesa de los baños de ola

El edificio más singular es el Gran Hotel (actualmente Hotel Sardinero) y el Gran Casino, que imita al de Montecarlo, que fue inaugurado en 1916. Además, destacan el Hotel Real, también de ese mismo año, y la Casa de Pardo, de 1915-1918.
